Reading Acura malfunction codes: Simplified procedure
To read trouble codes on Acura vehicles without a diagnostic tool, follow these simplified steps:
- Locate the diagnostic connector under the steering wheel. Depending on whether the car is left-hand drive or right-hand drive, the connector is located on the left or right side.
- Connect wire 4 or 9 to a wire or paper clip. If not connected, fuse 46 (15A) in the bonnet block may blow.
- With the ignition switched on (no need to start the engine), observe the “CHECK ENGINE” light. It will start flashing to indicate the fault code. Long flashes indicate the first digit of the fault number, short flashes indicate the second digit.
- Error codes can be read not only for engines but also for other systems. The relevant bulb on the fuse panel (e.g. transmission, power steering, etc.) will flash to indicate the specific system.
- Long flashes represent the tens and short flashes the units. For example:
Code 50: 5 long flashes.
Code 15: 1 long flash and 5 short flashes. - If there is more than one fault, the codes will cycle through with a long pause in the order in which they occur in the system.
- If there are no faults, the indicators will simply go out without flashing.
